Riviera Maya Journal #14 - Getting Ready - Larry Widen

I'm in the end stages of making plans for an August 12 return visit to Cancun and the Riviera Maya region. My daughter's heading off to college in a few weeks, and we thought this would be a great place for what might be our last big vacation as a family. The kids have been wanting to see Mexico for a while now, and the timing is right. Even though we're staying in a remote area north of Playa del Carmen, we're renting a car for the week so we can visit Cancun, Chichen Itza, Cozumel and a number of attractions in the region. There's a Mayan village near where we're staying, and I plan to see that as well. It's a 45-minute drive straight into the jungle and quite removed from the modern world. I'm told the elders speak only Mayan, but the younger people speak Spanish. Should be interesting. Watch for some new posts toward the end of August. I'll include stories and photos!

Today Playa del Carmen, or just 'Playa' as it is colloquially referred to, is the centre of the Riviera Maya concept, which covers from Cancún to Tulum and the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve. Playa is a stop for several cruise ships, which dock at the nearby Calica quarry docks, sportsbook about six miles south of the city. A Mayan-themed "ecological theme park", Xcaret (pronounced "e-shcaret") is a popular tourist destination just south of the town. Tourist activity in Playa del Carmen centres on the Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, a pedestrian walkway located just one block inland from the beach, and lined with boutique hotels, shops, bars and restaurants.

Riviera Maya, also known as the Mayan Riviera, is a tourism district following the coastal Highway 400 which parallels the Caribbean coastline of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán Peninsula.costa rica fishingThis district historically started at the city of Playa del Carmen and ended at the village of Tulum, although the towns of Puerto Morelos situated to the north and between Playa del Carmen and Cancun as well as the town of Felipe Carrillo Puerto situated 40 kilometres (25 mi) to the south of Tulum are both currently being promoted as part of the Riviera Maya tourist corridor.

One of the things about Cancun that I most liked was the color of the water. Cristal clear. I can't explain it, you have to see it for yourself. I had a great time there, and hopefully will return this year to practice some surfing. The waves are quite big and riding them is a lot of fun!

My honeymoon in Mexico was perfect. We went to Riviera Maya with an all included deal. They are accesible and are an easy way to travel abroad.
I must say, Riviera is one of the most beautiful beaches of Mexico. So for this Valentine's we are planning to relive our honeymoon.
